Match & Pre-fit Doors

To insure a proper fit The Door & Window Stop recommends a new

pre-hung door and jamb set when replacing an old door.

If you choose to have a door matched, please consider the following:

1)     MATCH DOOR MUST BE INSTALLED (DRY FITTED) PRIOR TO BEING PAINTED OR STAINED.

2)     MATCH  DOORS MUST BE ADJUSTED BY WHOMEVER IS INSTALLING THE DOOR TO INSURE A PROPER FIT (this may include cutting and sanding the door, adjusting and/or springing the hinges).

3)     THE NEW DOOR HAS BEEN SIZED FOR HEIGHT AND WIDTH, MORTISED FOR

HINGES AND BORE(S) BASED ON YOUR EXISTING DOOR.  i.e. (If your old door does not operate properly the new door will not operate properly)

4)     YOUR OLD DOOR AND JAMB MAY BE WARPED OR OUT OF SQUARE, THEREFORE YOUR NEW DOOR AND OLD JAMB MUST BE ADJUSTED TO OPERATE IN THE DOORWAY TOGETHER.

Appropriate Exposure for Wood Doors

The placement of your door is a major factor in its maintenance and longevity.  Without correct overhangs, wood doors with a south, southwest, southeast or west exposure will require frequent maintenance.  Doors with these exposures will experience performance problems, such as rapid finish deterioration, color fading, wood splitting, warping, moulding shrinkage, wood joint separation, and water penetration between moulding, panels and glass.

WOOD DOORS EXPOSED TO DIRECT SUNLIGHT AND/OR RAIN WILL NOT BE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY.

With proper overhangs, wood doors may face any direction (North, South, East, or West).  Doors installed in these types of applications still require maintenance.  They may need to be refinished every two to five years.

Situations that have direct exposure will require the use of Fiberglass, Steel or Composite doors.

Exposure Coefficient

To help you figure out the correct overhang required for your door, there’s a simple formula to follow.  The following illustration and chart should help you in factoring the appropriate exposure for your door.

Suggested Finishing Recommendations

For Wood stile & rail doors

1.                CHECK PANEL ALIGNMENT: One or two panels may need realignment. Tap into place using soft wood and hammer.

2.                SAND OUT OR FILL AND SAND ANY BLEMISHES:  Sand with the grain.  Ease any sharp edges. Finish sand, clean and dust thoroughly.

-                     FOR PAINT FINISH:  Apply good oil base primer to all surfaces including top and bottom.  Apply two coats of oil or latex resin base finish paint.  ALL SURFACES MUST BE FULLY PAINTED- 2 FACES, 2 EDGES, TOP & BOTTOM.

-                     FOR STAIN FINISH:  Use high grade stain or combination stain and sealer.  Apply two coats of high quality varnish.  Exterior doors require at LEAST two coats of high grade exterior finish.

*WARNING*

*        Stain finishes tend to accentuate differences in grains, textures and patches in wood.  You may wish to talk to your paint supplier about selecting a stain.

*        The life expectancy of today’s finish products has greatly reduced as a result of stringent environmental regulations, thus refinishing must be performed yearly.

*        Over 70% of all product problems are caused by improper or inadequate painting or finishing, or by improper door application-i.e. wood door exposed to direct sun and/or rain.
